Applications are invited for grants of up to $1,000 for individual Catholic schools or dioceses to participate in 2008 National Literacy and Numeracy Week. The theme for the Week will be Partnerships in Learning, with a focus on parents, teachers and members of the community supporting young people to develop strong literacy and numeracy skills.

The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards is the oldest and largest poetry competition for school students in Australia.

The poetry awards aim to capture the imagination of students, inspiring them to express their thoughts creatively through poetry; while celebrating the legendary work of Dorothea Mackellar, author of the famous poem ‘My Country’. It is a unique national event, giving Australia’s young people a voice and an opportunity to strive for excellence in literature.

Brother John Taylor Award for 2007 |

The 2007 Brother John Taylor Award has awarded to Br Michael Flanagan fms , Principal of the Berne Education Centre. The award was made in acknowledgement of the wonderful work that has been done with young people at the Berne Centre who have been able to access quality education and intervention programs that would have otherwise have been denied them and who have been given skills and the confidence to pursue careers after leaving the Centre.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) |
|

In May 2008, as part of the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), national tests will be held in literacy and numeracy for all students in Australia at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. These tests will replace the current State and Territory-based assessments and have the support of all Education Ministers.
The Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA), through the Australian Education Systems Officials Committee (AESOC), has directed the Curriculum Corporation to project manage the tests in 2008 and 2009.
The website provides information about NAPLAN and will continue to be developed and updated.

The individual planning profile aims to identify the level of support needs (high, moderate, low) of a student with an identified disability irrespective of educational setting. A profile of a student is developed across 6 focus areas: curriculum participation, communication, mobility, personal care, safety and social skills, by identifying the adjustments that are currently in place to support the student and using the examples of descriptors to assist with the identification of a level of support for each focus area.
