The New Disability Standards for Education are now in force.
The Standards are made under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) which seeks to eliminate discrimination on the ground of disability and prohibits this discrimination in relation to education.
‘The new Standards are a clear demonstration of the Government’s ongoing commitment to overcoming discrimination against people with a disability,’ Mr Ruddock said.
‘They have evolved through extensive consultations with education, training and disability stakeholders.’
They set out:
the obligations of education and training providers in relation to the education of students with disabilities;
how those obligations can be met; and
what students with disabilities can reasonably expect in participation in education.
‘Government and non-government providers in all education sectors, including the pre-schooling, schooling, vocational education and training, higher education, and adult and community education sectors will be covered by this new legislation,’ Mr Ruddock said.
‘It will also apply to providers of educational services, including curriculum and accreditation bodies.’
The new standards are expected to come into effect after 15 sitting days of each of the Houses of Parliament.
